UMich Shares Severe Weather Policy: Emergency Operations Guidelines

As winter approaches, the University of Michigan may reduce non-critical operations during severe weather. Critical staff must report, while others work remotely or stay home without pay loss if unable to work remotely. For details, see the Emergency Reduction in Operations policy.

As winter approaches, the University of Michigan is preparing for potential severe weather. Campus leaders have outlined the university’s policy for reducing operations during extreme conditions. In such cases, only essential faculty and staff are required to be on campus. Non-critical operations may be temporarily reduced to ensure safety.

In short-term severe weather events, the university may enact an emergency reduction in operations, limiting non-essential activities on campus. Essential staff, designated as critical, must report to campus. Each unit, including schools and administrative departments, must identify critical operations, such as police and medical services, and designate specific employees as essential.

Non-critical faculty and staff should avoid coming to campus during these times. Those working remotely should continue their duties from home. Employees who usually work on-site but are non-critical should also work remotely if possible.

For non-critical employees who cannot work remotely, absence during a short-term emergency reduction in operations will not affect their pay. Details of the policy can be accessed via the Standard Practice Guide on Emergency Reduction in Operations, SPG 201.27.

Notification of campuswide emergency reductions will be communicated through UM Emergency Alerts, the U-M Gateway homepage, and The University Record. Faculty, staff, and students should verify their enrollment in UM Emergency Alerts via Wolverine Access. If severe weather begins after arrival at work, departments will decide if employees can leave early.

Decisions regarding operational reductions at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint will be made by their respective leaders. Michigan Medicine employees, including those in U-M Health and Shared Services, are considered critical and must report to work during scheduled shifts. They should refer to the Emergency Management Operations Winter Storm Guideline for detailed procedures.
