Vice President JD Vance Addresses Mixed Topics at Howell Event

In an unexpected twist, Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Howell, initially slated to focus on tax cuts and economic strategies, veered into discussions on a variety of pressing topics during his address on Wednesday.

A significant portion of Vance’s speech paid tribute to the late Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative activist who recently died from a gunshot wound at a rally in Utah. Vance commended Kirk for his work in mobilizing young individuals towards conservative ideologies.

“We reject political violence,” stated Vance. “And we reject the crazy left-wing radicals that gunned down our friend Charlie Kirk. Let’s talk to one another and not try to shoot each other down for disagreeing.” Prosecutors have indicated that Kirk was targeted “based on his political expression,” though specifics on the motive remain undisclosed. More details are available in the prosecutors’ report.

Crime in Detroit was another focal point in Vance’s speech. Despite Detroit’s historically high violent crime rates, recent data indicates a downward trend according to local officials. Vance addressed Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer directly, suggesting the potential deployment of national guard troops to assist: “It’s the people in Detroit who suffer the most when crime is allowed to run rampant all over city streets,” he declared. “Gretchen, we are glad to send the national guard to Detroit, Michigan. All you’ve got to do is ask.” This proposition was met with applause from the audience.

This suggestion follows previous critiques of the Trump administration’s decision to send national guard troops to various U.S. cities, as highlighted in recent reports.

Economic issues also shared the spotlight at the gathering, held at a metal stamping plant near Howell. U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer lauded the administration’s tax and regulatory cuts aiming to boost U.S. businesses. She remarked, “Turns out all we needed to kick off the golden age was a new president.”

Despite these optimistic views, economic challenges persist. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, inflation remains slightly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Furthermore, recent data from the Associated Press points to a slowdown in hiring and a rise in unemployment rates.

The Democratic National Committee was quick to criticize Vance’s Michigan appearance. DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer commented, “Trump and Vance have delivered an economic disaster: Prices are soaring, wages are decreasing, jobs are disappearing, and the manufacturing sector is being gutted.”
