Governor Whitmer Expresses Willingness to Collaborate with President Trump on Common Goals

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended her congratulations, indicating a desire to work together on mutual objectives with both the President and the Republican members of the Legislature.

The Governor’s statement emerged as Trump delivered his inaugural speech, during which he acknowledged auto workers and pledged to rescind certain EPA vehicle emissions standards, referring to them as “the EV mandate.” While these standards do not necessitate specific vehicle purchases, Trump argued that altering energy regulations would support the auto sector and preserve employment.

Despite her willingness to collaborate, Whitmer has voiced concerns regarding Trump’s proposed tariffs and their potential impact on Michigan’s manufacturing industry.

“Here in Michigan, we are focused on creating good-paying, local jobs, fixing the damn roads, fighting for our advanced manufacturing industries including autos, defense, maritime, and aerospace, and working with our partners in Canada to keep costs low for working families and small businesses,” Whitmer stated on Monday.

Although a former advocate for Vice President Kamala Harris during the election, Whitmer has moderated her criticism of Trump after his victory in Michigan, a state he had lost in 2020.

Governor Whitmer is expected to outline her key priorities more comprehensively during her upcoming State of the State address next month. The speech was postponed to avoid clashing with the presidential inauguration.

Michigan Republicans have expressed approval of Trump’s initial moves and his inauguration.

“Today is a monumental day in American history and the beginning of a much stronger and successful time for our nation,” commented House Speaker Matt Hall (R-Richland Twp.) in an emailed statement. “The American people have spoken asking for real change, and now President Trump is taking bold, decisive action to immediately deliver on his promises to secure our borders, assert American energy dominance, and bolster Michigan’s auto industry.”
