Jeremiah Shinn, a finalist for the University of Montana president role, is drawn to the position due to the unique sense of community evident in Missoula’s higher education landscape. Shinn, the sole finalist for the presidency, engaged in forums with numerous campus groups including students, faculty, and the public. Known as “relatable and approachable,” Shinn emphasized the university’s community-focused culture and its top-tier research status.

In various forums, Shinn highlighted his experience as a first-generation, low-income student and how it influences his leadership approach. He addressed questions on student rights, emphasizing that public universities should serve all students equally. “We’re going to serve every single one of our students,” Shinn stated, underscoring his inclusive vision.

Shinn, emerging from over 70 applicants, is praised for his focus on student affairs. His discussions included potential budget cuts at UM, where he stressed the need for academic program viability and responsiveness to external demands. “We have to take a look at those,” Shinn noted about programs not meeting student needs.

At a press conference, Shinn also addressed enrollment strategies, noting the importance of student success both inside and outside the classroom. “Academics is the heart of everything that we do,” he said, aiming to enhance student experiences beyond classroom hours.

Commissioner Clayton Christian explained the single finalist approach, citing a “buyer’s market” in hiring as the reason for the change in the process. Feedback from Shinn’s meetings will guide the final decision, with potential for other candidates if necessary.

Shinn’s educational background includes a Ph.D. from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s from the University of Michigan. His qualifications and focus on both the business and academic components of university leadership have been noted by faculty, who are eager to see if he truly connects with the academic mission.
