Montana homeowners face an important deadline on October 1 to apply for property tax rebates up to $400 for their 2024 bills. This tax relief effort is part of a bipartisan initiative by state lawmakers and Governor Greg Gianforte to combat escalating residential property taxes affecting many residents. Designed to aid single-family homes, apartments, condos, and mobile homes, these rebates are targeted at Montana taxpayers who’ve owned and occupied their properties for a minimum of seven months in 2024.
The Montana Department of Revenue specifies that properties owned by limited liability corporations and certain trusts are not eligible for the rebates. Moreover, individuals renting homes will not benefit from this scheme as their landlords are responsible for the property taxes.
For homeowners wishing to apply, the process is straightforward through the state’s revenue department website at getmyrebate.mt.gov. Applicants need to provide their name, Social Security number, and the property’s Montana Cadastral geocode. Those who have paid less than $400 in 2024 property taxes must indicate the amount detailed in their tax notice from their county treasurer.
Larger counties like Yellowstone, Missoula, and Cascade offer an “iTax” service for residents to check their tax bills by address or owner name. These resources make it simpler for residents to manage their tax information.
This rebate is part of the second-home tax and homestead tax relief package signed into law by Gianforte earlier this year. The package introduces measures to lower tax burdens on primary residences and long-term rentals, while increasing taxes on other residential properties starting in 2026. Previously, Montana offered rebates of up to $675 for homeowner taxes billed in 2023 and 2022.
Additional details on the rebate and the application process can be found on the revenue department’s website. The application window runs from August 15 to October 1, providing ample time for eligible homeowners to submit their claims.
