State contest will pick new highway welcome signs

A web-based poll offers Montanans the chance to choose from three proposed designs for updating the state’s highway welcome signs. The Montana Department of Commerce announced the poll, which runs through Dec. 31, allowing votes at visitmt.com/welcome-sign. Participants need to provide their name, email, and zip code to vote.

Three design options are available for selection, aligned with the new promotional brand introduced in May by the commerce department and Gov. Greg Gianforte. This brand aims to market Montana to tourists, businesses, and international trade partners.

This week, the department confirmed that the poll would determine the updated signage design inspired by Montana’s new branding. “Our highway signs give our families, friends, and visitors the warm welcome they deserve,” Gianforte stated, expressing enthusiasm about the upcoming vote outcome.

While the poll accepts out-of-state zip codes, only votes from Montana residents will influence the decision, according to Chief Marketing Officer Mitch Staley. The current welcome signs at state boundaries, installed in 2014, are scheduled for replacement in spring. Many signs are weathered or vandalized, necessitating updates. The cost for 34 new signs is being calculated and will be funded through the state lodging tax allocated for marketing.
