Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen revealed a record surge in new business registrations for 2024. During a press conference with Gov. Greg Gianforte, Jacobsen announced over 63,814 new businesses filed, surpassing last year’s numbers by nearly 4,000. The announcement took place at Granite Peak Athletics in Helena, highlighting one of the numerous businesses contributing to this growth.
Jacobsen stated, “By cutting red tape, adopting pro-business policies, and working closely with Montana’s business community, we’ve made it easier than ever to do business in our great state. These intentional efforts have led to another record-breaking year for new business creation.” Gov. Gianforte echoed this sentiment, attributing the success to pro-jobs policies that support entrepreneurs and business growth. “More Montanans are working than ever before and our entrepreneurs continue to create new businesses at record levels,” Gianforte noted.
This marks the fourth consecutive year of record-breaking new business registrations. In 2021, about 50,000 businesses were registered, increasing to nearly 54,000 in 2022, and around 60,000 in 2023. The press conference took place at Granite Peak Athletics, a facility that opened last fall in East Helena, providing a space for local athletes to train.
Co-Founder Nolan Gilbert said, “We’re able to give an avenue for kids to grow in their athletic ability but more importantly, develop their life skills in this place and a safe environment to train.” Additionally, a local high school student, Nalaki, shared how the facility has improved their sports skills during the winter months.
Attracting job-creating businesses remains a priority for the Gianforte administration, with reforms in the state’s tax code to boost business investment. The Montana Business Economic Report, issued by the Secretary of State’s office, noted April as a peak month with nearly 6,000 new business registrations. The report is accessible on the Secretary of State’s website.
