The Montana Department of Commerce announced this week that two tribal governments in Montana will receive $100,000 in grant funding to enhance local tribal tourism assets. The funding aims to develop, expand, and fortify the tribal tourism economy through the Commerce’s Tribal Tourism Grant Program. The initiative highlights the state’s commitment to boosting tourism in tribal regions, reflecting a strategic investment in cultural and economic growth.

According to the news release, the recipients of the grant are:

  • Blackfeet Nation will receive $50,000 to upgrade and repair tribally owned campgrounds across multiple locations.
  • Fort Belknap Indian Community will also receive $50,000 for improvements and upgrades at the Milk River Indian Days arbor site located in Fort Belknap Agency.

Commerce Director Marta Bertoglio stated, “Commerce’s Tribal Tourism Grants support the development and improvement of shovel-ready tourism industry tribal projects such as niche product development, visitor facilities and venue upgrades and construction.”

Previously, in 2024, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes received $50,000 for essential repairs at The Bison on Flathead Lake vacation rental property. CSKT Planning Director Janet Camel noted the significance of the funds and administrative assistance provided by the tribal tourism program. “This funding allowed us to make critical repairs at our vacation rental property on Flathead Lake, including a new roof, windows, heater and stairway that provides easier access to the shore,” Camel said.

The grant program is run on a reimbursement basis, requiring a 50% tribal match. Eligible projects need to be shovel-ready and show a long-term investment commitment from both the state and the tribes.
