The Montana state health department’s top official for American Indian health, Stephanie Iron Shooter, is stepping down, according to an email unveiled by Montana Free Press. Iron Shooter has led the Office of American Indian Health since February 2022 and is the third person in this role, created in 2015 to address health disparities among Native Americans.
In a September 2 email to tribal leaders, Iron Shooter explained her resignation was due to “recent events.” She expressed, “I did my best for our people. I really thought I could make a difference.” Her email continued, emphasizing her commitment to supporting Native American health and wellness in other capacities, and she intends to visit in October to share her story.
Heidi DeRoche, the Office of American Indian Health programs officer, will temporarily fill the director role, as stated by Charlie Brereton, director of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. Brereton assured the department’s commitment to collaborating with Montana tribes to meet tribal health needs.
Despite stating her last day was October 2, MTFP confirmed her departure on September 2. Iron Shooter did not immediately respond to MTFP’s request for comment. Her leadership faced scrutiny, as she encountered criticisms from tribal leaders regarding the oversight of programs affecting tribal communities.
Controversy arose when the health department eliminated the tribal relations manager position, sparking outrage due to lack of consultation. Though Iron Shooter argued the role was redundant, members of the American Indian Caucus and lawmakers urged its reinstatement. Director Brereton is committed to rehiring for the tribal relations manager position, as Iron Shooter mentioned at the State-Tribal Relations Interim Committee meeting on August 25.
Sen. Susan Webber, D-Browning, a vocal critic, expressed surprise at Iron Shooter’s unexpected resignation, stating it was surprising given her support for DPHHS Director Brereton and her efforts to build the department.
