University of Montana Names Jeffrey Michael as New BBER Director

After a nationwide search, the University of Montana has appointed Jeffrey Michael as the new director of BBER.

Following an extensive national search, the University of Montana announced Jeffrey Michael as the new director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research. This significant appointment highlights the university’s commitment to enhancing Montana’s economic research capabilities. The BBER, a key division within UM’s College of Business, is renowned for its comprehensive reports on Montana economy topics like manufacturing trends and housing affordability. It also hosts widely-attended annual economic outlook seminars across the state.

Michael, who has commenced his role at BBER, previously held a position at the University of the Pacific in California. Longtime director Patrick Barkey will continue as research director until his planned retirement in June 2025. “We are truly fortunate to be bringing on a new leader with the experience and skills of Jeff Michael to the state of Montana,” Barkey noted, expressing confidence in Michael’s ability to make a significant impact.

With over a decade of experience as executive director of the Center for Business and Policy Research at the University of the Pacific, Michael also directed public policy at McGeorge School of Law since 2021. “BBER has a tremendous legacy of helping business, government, and the public understand the economy of Montana,” Michael stated. He is eager to engage with Montana’s business and civic leaders on pressing economic issues.

In his new role, Michael will lead a team of 20 research professionals at the nationally recognized BBER. The center continues to produce vital economic data and industry reports for various regions of Montana, while providing critical economic forecasts statewide.
