Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has expressed his support for ending mail-in voting, even though he has utilized this method himself on several occasions.

Last month, President Donald Trump suggested he would sign an executive order to establish a national voter ID law and largely eliminate mail-in ballots. However, the feasibility of such an order remains uncertain, as voting regulations are typically determined by individual states.

Nevada is among eight states that practice “universal mail-in voting,” sending a ballot to every registered voter. When questioned by the Nevada Independent concerning his stance on Trump’s proposal, Lombardo criticized the practice.

“I would, of course, support President Trump’s efforts to end universal mail-in voting,” Lombardo stated in a written reply. He did not address further inquiries regarding his position on other forms of mail-in voting.

Records from the Clark County Election Department reveal that Lombardo voted by mail on three occasions in the past five years: during the 2024 presidential primary, the 2024 down ballot primary, and the 2020 presidential election.

The move to abolish mail-in voting could inadvertently disadvantage Lombardo and other Republicans, as nearly half of rural Nevada voters, who predominantly supported Trump, opted for mail-in ballots in 2024.

Lombardo’s alignment with Trump’s election-related positions is not new. In 2022, he expressed skepticism about the 2020 election’s legitimacy but refrained from fully endorsing Trump’s claims of voter fraud. Furthermore, his political action committee (PAC) supported an election denier last year, as reported by the Nevada Independent.

Having secured the governorship in the 2022 election by a narrow margin of fewer than 15,500 votes, Lombardo is seeking a second term. His anticipated Democratic challenger is state Attorney General Aaron Ford.
