In a significant economic boost to Graham County, Eco King Solutions, LLC, a new arm of a major international manufacturer, is set to create 515 jobs. The company plans an $80.5 million investment in Robbinsville to launch its inaugural North American production facility for biodegradable paper tableware.
Governor Josh Stein emphasized North Carolina’s appeal to international businesses, stating, “North Carolina offers global companies a perfect location for expansion into North America.” He welcomed Eco King Solutions to the western part of the state, highlighting the region’s favorable business climate, educational opportunities, and workforce programs.
The Chinese manufacturer Zhejiang Kingsun Eco-pack Co., Ltd, established in 2008 with three operational factories in China, owns Eco King Solutions. The company produces disposable dishware like bowls, plates, and containers for various food service industries, serving an expanding North American client base. This new facility in Robbinsville aims to enhance supply chain efficiency while reducing shipping costs and production times.
Ping Zhang, Chairman of Eco King Solutions, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome in the area, stating, “We have been impressed by how welcoming Robbinsville, Graham County and North Carolina have been to our company and this important project.” He highlighted the local workforce, quality of life, and business-friendly environment as key factors in their decision.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley praised the investment as a triumph for manufacturing in western North Carolina, noting the region’s recognition as a top business destination. He mentioned, “Whether it’s CNBC naming us the top state for business or investments from CEOs around the world, North Carolina continues to be a global destination for great job creation.”
The average salary for the newly created positions will be $46,707, aligning closely with the current average wage in Graham County of $46,628. This development is expected to inject over $14 million annually into the local economy through payroll.
The Eco King project is supported partly by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), sanctioned by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. Over a 12-year grant period, the project is predicted to bolster the state’s economy by more than $743.4 million. A reimbursement of up to $2,894,000 is possible under the JDIG agreement, contingent on the company meeting job creation and investment benchmarks.
The projected return on public investment is 106%, suggesting that for every dollar spent, the state could see $2.06 in revenue. JDIG initiatives often yield a positive net tax gain for the state, even after accounting for grant reimbursements.
Senator Kevin Corbin lauded the decision, remarking, “A major economic development win like today’s announcement provides proof that Robbinsville and Graham County are great places to do business.” Representative Karl E. Gillespie echoed this sentiment, celebrating the new facility as a significant contributor to the local economy and community well-being.
This initiative involved collaboration among the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and various local and state entities, including the North Carolina General Assembly, the Community College System, and regional development organizations.
