North Carolina Invites Public Input for Economic Development Plan

Residents across NC are urged to join public sessions from Aug. 27 to shape the state's economic plan, aiming for inclusive growth and prosperity by 2030.

Statewide Public Discussions to Shape North Carolina’s Economic Development

North Carolinians have a unique chance to influence their state’s economic direction through a series of public listening sessions starting on August 27. Hosted by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, these meetings invite residents to share their insights and priorities, which will be integral in crafting the state’s next Comprehensive Strategic Economic Development Plan.

Taking place across the state’s eight Prosperity Zones and online, these sessions are facilitated by the ncIMPACT Initiative at the University of North Carolina School of Government. The feedback collected will guide a Steering Committee, which includes leaders from various sectors, in devising a collaborative plan to enhance communities and stimulate economic growth.

“North Carolina’s economic success is a product of strategic investments in our people, our places, and our partnerships, and these sessions will help us shape a plan that makes us more competitive and prosperous,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley, who also serves as chair of the steering committee. “We need the voices of people from around the state to help us build a plan that works for all regions of North Carolina.”

Open to residents, community members, and leaders from governments, organizations, and industries, these sessions are accessible to all interested parties. Free online registration is available here.

The sessions will also be informed by a comprehensive economic analysis by the Department’s Labor and Economic Analysis Division (LEAD), ensuring that the plan’s priorities and recommendations are data-driven.

“North Carolina’s economic future is best shaped by those who live and work in our communities every day,” said Anita Brown-Graham, director of the ncIMPACT Initiative at the UNC School of Government. “We want to hear their stories, ideas, and perspectives so the plan reflects the full range of opportunities and challenges across our state.”

This plan, mandated every four years per G.S. 143B-434.01, aims to align resources and policies across key sectors to guarantee opportunities for all North Carolinians, irrespective of their location or background. Set to be revealed in spring 2026, it will serve as a blueprint for the state’s strategy through 2030, addressing workforce needs, regional strengths, and industry priorities.
