Renew NC Housing Program Deadline Approaching for Western NC Homeowners

Homeowners in 28 western NC counties have until Jan. 31 to apply for Renew NC's Single-Family Housing Program to aid post-Hurricane Helene recovery.

Approaching Deadline for Housing Recovery Assistance in Western North Carolina

Homeowners in western North Carolina are being reminded of an important deadline. The state’s disaster recovery initiative, Renew NC, is urging eligible individuals to apply for assistance through its Single-Family Housing Program by January 31. This program offers support for housing rehabilitation, reconstruction, replacement, and reimbursement.

Governor Josh Stein emphasized the state’s commitment to aiding families affected by Hurricane Helene, stating, “North Carolina is committed to helping families who lost their homes during Hurricane Helene recover. Renew NC’s Single-Family Housing Program is getting people back into safe and restored homes, and we want to ensure every eligible homeowner has the opportunity to apply before the January 31 deadline.”

The initiative targets 28 counties in western North Carolina—such as Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell—and one ZIP code in Mecklenburg County (28214). Priority is given to low-to-moderate income families with elderly members, children, and individuals with disabilities.

Applications can be submitted online, in person, or by phone. For in-person assistance, Renew NC has intake centers in Asheville, Boone, and Marion, offering services from Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in both English and Spanish. Additional intake locations are available across the region with varied operating hours.

Renew NC encourages homeowners to begin their application process before the deadline, as this allows for extended time to manage additional requirements, like documentation submission. As of now, the program has received over 7,500 applications, with a substantial portion under eligibility review. So far, 86 grants have been issued, and 74 projects are preparing for construction.

Recently completed projects include 14 construction efforts in several counties such as Cleveland and Wilkes, consisting of reconstructions, rehabilitations, and replacements. Rehabilitation focuses on repairing damage, while reconstruction and replacement provide new housing solutions.

Currently, 15 projects are underway, spanning across Buncombe, Henderson, and other counties, comprising 12 reconstructions, two rehabilitations, and one replacement.

Homeowners who previously received FEMA assistance or insurance claims can still apply for the program, as it aims to address remaining recovery needs. Post-January 31, Renew NC will expedite the application review and construction processes.

Funded by a $1.4 billion Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) from HUD, $807 million is allocated to the Single-Family Housing Program. The initiative is managed by the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Revitalization (DCR).
