Article Summary –
Wilmington faces a PFAS contamination crisis affecting public health. These “forever chemicals” persist, causing long-term health risks. The Biden administration has introduced measures to tackle PFAS, unlike Trump’s term, which weakened safeguards. Strong leadership is crucial for future protection.
Wilmington is a dream for kids who adore outdoor play. Its rivers, beaches, and estuaries served as playgrounds and classrooms, fostering a lifelong passion for nature. Unfortunately, its waterways now face grave threats.
For decades, Wilmington’s waters have been contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), harmful chemicals known as “forever chemicals.” These substances persist in the environment and accumulate in our bodies, posing serious health risks.
As a former Senate policy advisor and White House environmental assistant, I’ve seen effective federal leadership is essential in tackling this PFAS crisis. Wilmington’s PFAS issue is a serious public health threat, linked to cancer, liver damage, and more. Thousands in the Cape Fear region have been exposed to these chemicals.
The Biden-Harris administration is implementing measures such as national drinking water standards and cleanup efforts, alongside the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to address PFAS contamination and improve water systems.
In contrast, a Trump Administration could worsen the crisis. His prior administration weakened PFAS safeguards, and the Project 2025 plan poses risks of further regulatory rollback.
Strong leadership is crucial to protect North Carolina’s families and natural beauty. Wilmington needs decisive actions to safeguard our health and preserve the environment.
