Stacy Garrity’s Corporate Role Under Scrutiny Amid Environmental and Workforce Decisions

Stacy Garrity, currently aiming for the Pennsylvania governor’s seat as a Republican candidate, has previously held significant positions at Global Tungsten & Powders, a company involved in offshoring jobs and environmental controversies.

Garrity’s tenure at Global Tungsten & Powders spanned from 1987 to 2021, where she held at least nine roles, culminating as vice president of government affairs. The firm specializes in manufacturing refractory metal powders and similar products.

Her campaign highlights her extensive business experience, describing her journey from being an accountant to becoming one of the first two female vice presidents at the company. Garrity has emphasized her global business dealings, stating she was “in a different country every month” for negotiations, as shared with the Susquehanna Valley Center for Public Policy.

From 2008 to 2019, Global Tungsten & Powders implemented significant layoffs, reducing its Towanda, PA workforce by 48%, from 980 to 500 employees. During this process, around 200 employees opted for voluntary furloughs to mitigate layoffs.

Simultaneously, the corporation expanded its foreign workforce, notably at a Czech facility where Garrity was managing director between 2011 and 2019. While her exact involvement in these restructuring decisions is unclear, the company also increased hiring at a Finnish facility Garrity helped acquire in 2015, as she mentioned on The Marc Scaringi Show.

Global Tungsten & Powders has also encountered environmental challenges. In 2018, the Environmental Integrity Project labeled it a super polluter, following an EPA fine of $22,281 for not reporting a 213-pound anhydrous ammonia release. The EPA categorizes this gas as an “extremely hazardous substance.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PDEP) announced an investigation earlier this year into allegations of the company discharging 100 gallons of toxic naphthalene into the Susquehanna River, a critical water source for millions.

Currently serving as Pennsylvania’s treasurer since her election in 2021, Garrity is endorsed by former President Donald Trump in her gubernatorial bid against Democratic incumbent Gov. Josh Shapiro.
