Health Insurance at Risk for Thousands of Iowans Due to Congressional Standoff
As the year-end deadline approaches, many Iowans face the potential loss of their health insurance. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) subsidies, which make insurance plans more affordable, are set to expire unless Congress acts to extend them. Without action, premiums could increase drastically, doubling or tripling for some individuals.
Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, serving Iowa’s 1st District, opposes the extension of these subsidies, labeling them as a “bailout.” In a statement to the Des Moines Register on October 3, she emphasized the need for marketplace reforms over subsidies that benefit those earning over $250,000 annually.
Contrary to Miller-Meeks’ assertion, a report from Keep Americans Covered indicates that 95% of the subsidies go to individuals earning less than $200,000, with the majority aiding those with incomes below $80,000.
The political debate over these subsidies has contributed to the federal government shutdown that began on October 1. Democrats in Congress have linked reopening the government to the extension of these subsidies, requiring only a small number of Republican votes to pass the measure in the House.
Miller-Meeks’ stance against the subsidies aligns with her opposition to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, where these provisions were first introduced. Her support for President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which proposed significant reductions to Medicaid, further compounds the potential loss of insurance for an estimated 100,000 Iowans due to combined policy changes.
Approximately 24,000 constituents in Miller-Meeks’ district have benefitted from the Obamacare subsidies. Her opposition to their extension comes as she faces a challenging reelection campaign in 2026, being considered one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the upcoming elections.
