Ohio Representative Mike Turner has been a steadfast supporter of U.S. military interventions abroad, prominently backing the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Elected to Congress in 2002, Turner represents Ohio’s 10th District and is seeking his 13th term in office this year.
During the period from March to September 2026, Turner cast six votes opposing the cessation of the Iranian conflict. This war has contributed to a noticeable increase in gas prices, with many Americans now paying upwards of $4 per gallon.
The war is perceived by some as a deviation from President Donald Trump’s campaign pledge to avoid initiating new military engagements, as highlighted in a report.
Turner has justified his stance by asserting that the military action is crucial to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, this rationale is disputed by several foreign policy experts, including Joe Kent, Trump’s former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, who expressed skepticism regarding the immediacy of the threat posed by Iran.
Polling data indicates that Turner’s pro-war position may be at odds with public opinion. A recent Pew Research Center survey showed that 65% of Americans disapprove of the conflict and its management.
Turner’s record also includes backing the Iraq War from 2003 to 2011, which resulted in over 4,500 U.S. military casualties.
In a 2006 interview with KPBS, Turner criticized opponents of the Iraq War, stating, “I regret that this issue, of Iraq, continues to be made a political issue. Something as simple as the war on terror, where we should have full and unanimous support from everyone, turns into a litany of political complaints and assaults on the administration.”
In 2018, he described Trump’s military strikes on Syria as a “necessary action,” according to a press release.
Financial records from OpenSecrets reveal that Turner has received over $2 million in campaign contributions from defense-related industries. As of 2024, he was ranked the ninth-highest recipient of funds from the defense sector.
Turner’s opponent in this election cycle is Democrat Kristina Knickerbocker, an Air Force veteran who stated in June that she intends to vote to end the Iran war if elected. She emphasized, “As a veteran, I know the true cost of war. I would never vote to send our troops into harm’s way without a plan, a purpose, and the full authorization of Congress.”
