Rep. Mike Lawler’s Involvement with Anti-Abortion Efforts Raises Questions
New York’s Representative Mike Lawler was recently seen engaging with anti-abortion activities, stirring debate over his previously stated moderate stance on reproductive rights.
Lawler shared images from the 39th Annual Love Life Fundraising Banquet on October 20 through his social media platforms. This event aimed to support the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Rockland, located within his constituency.
These pregnancy centers, often labeled as crisis pregnancy centers, aim to prevent abortions by disseminating medical misinformation, according to their critics. It is alleged that these centers present themselves as legitimate healthcare providers, targeting vulnerable individuals.
According to Planned Parenthood’s report, “Most anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers are not licensed as medical clinics. Workers and volunteers often give the impression of being medical providers by wearing white coats, talking to clients in a private area with an examination table, and collecting health information; however, they often have no medical training.”
Lawler’s participation in the fundraiser in October 2023 included a photo opportunity with the center’s executive director.
Subsequently, Lawler supported the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, legislation designed to prevent states from restricting federal funding for these centers. The act passed in the House but was halted in the Senate.
Despite his campaign’s emphasis on a “mainstream position” on abortion rights, as outlined on his campaign website, Lawler’s actions suggest otherwise. His campaign commitments included ensuring access to contraception.
However, Care Net Pregnancy Center of Rockland’s website criticizes emergency contraception, such as Plan B, labeling it as an “abortifacient,” a description not supported by the medical community.
The organizer of the fundraiser, Love Life, has been vocal about its stance against Planned Parenthood, advocating for its defunding. Planned Parenthood is known for providing numerous health services, including affordable contraception.
With Lawler seeking a third term and abortion expected to be a pivotal topic in the upcoming election, his past actions are under scrutiny.
According to DCCC spokesperson Riya Vashi, “Mike Lawler has spent his entire career attacking reproductive freedom. Lawler can’t hide the reality of his anti-choice extremism, and it won’t bode well for him come 2026.”
