Scott Brown, the former Senator from Massachusetts who is well-known for his stance against the Affordable Care Act (ACA), has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat in New Hampshire, which will be contested next year.
In his campaign launch video, Brown expressed his support for President Donald Trump and criticized what he described as the “extreme left,” accusing them of attempting to empower Hamas and allowing men to participate in women’s sports.
Brown voiced his dissatisfaction with the current federal representation, telling WMUR, “The reason I’m running is I’m kind of fed up with the federal delegation,” citing issues such as open borders, sanctuary cities, and the protection of what he termed the “so-called rights of illegals.”
In 2010, Brown made headlines with his surprising victory in a special election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. However, he lost the seat to Sen. Elizabeth Warren two years later.
During his tenure, Brown was a staunch opponent of the ACA, also known as Obamacare. He argued that the law, which extends health insurance coverage to 44 million Americans, was financially unsound and would increase the federal deficit.
Brown’s position was clear when he said, “We need to drop this whole scheme of federally controlled health care,” as reported by CBS News in 2010, during the ACA debates. He subsequently voted for its repeal.
Contrary to Brown’s assertions, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has found that the ACA actually contributes to reducing the deficit, as noted in a report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Brown attempted to secure a Senate seat in New Hampshire in 2014, but faced criticism for moving his official residence to the state shortly before his campaign, leading to accusations of carpetbagging.
In that campaign, Brown continued to criticize the ACA, emphasizing principles over economics, particularly opposing the law’s tax penalties for the uninsured as an infringement on civil liberties.
Articulating his stance, Brown declared, “Obamacare forces us to make a choice: live free or log on,” adding, “and here in New Hampshire, we choose freedom.”
Brown was defeated in 2014 by Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, losing by nearly 16,000 votes. He later served as the U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa during the Trump administration.
Currently, Brown is the first major Republican to declare his candidacy for the New Hampshire Senate race. On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas has emerged as a prominent candidate.
Pappas addressed Brown’s entry into the race on social media, stating, “It’s official: MAGA loyalist Scott Brown just announced he’s running to flip this seat red,” and continued, “New Hampshire rejected him before, and we can do it again.”
