Rep. Zach Nunn’s Stance on ACA and Recent Legislative Moves

Iowa Representative Zach Nunn has cast a vote in favor of extending tax credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare. Despite this action, Nunn maintains that his long-term objective remains the repeal of the healthcare program.

Since the beginning of the year, over 126,000 residents of Iowa have faced increased insurance premiums following the expiration of these credits. In response, Nunn supported a Democratic proposal to prolong the credits for an additional three years. This move aligns with the actions of 16 other House Republicans who are in challenging reelection scenarios.

At a GOP voter gathering in Urbandale on January 28, Nunn expressed his opposition to the ACA, stating, “Let me be very clear, I’m not in favor of the ACA going forward,” and emphasized his commitment to removing the program while ensuring that Iowans are not left without support.

He further noted the readiness of a Republican bill aimed at ending Obamacare promptly.

The House passed the extension of the tax credits on January 8 with 230 votes. However, the Republican-controlled Senate is unlikely to advance the bill. If the situation remains unchanged, approximately 22 million Americans could face increased premiums, reduced coverage options, or loss of insurance altogether.

This development follows the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), passed last year, projected to reduce Medicaid funding by up to $1 trillion over the next decade, potentially affecting 15 million Americans’ insurance coverage by 2035. The funds saved are designated for tax cuts benefiting wealthy individuals and large corporations.

Nunn has been a proponent of OBBB and has actively promoted the legislation through televised advertisements, as seen here.

The organization Unrig Our Economy, advocating for workers’ interests, criticized Nunn’s approach to healthcare. Leor Tal, the group’s director, remarked, “Nunn and his Republican colleagues voted for the largest cuts to health care in history in order to give more tax breaks to billionaires.” Tal further argued that the focus should be on preserving Americans’ healthcare access rather than dismantling the ACA.

Polls indicate public support for Obamacare, with a KFF tracking poll showing a 58% approval rating as of January 2026.

As Nunn campaigns for a third term, Democrats have identified him as one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the upcoming congressional elections.
