Power Outage Challenges at Grand Canyon’s North Rim
Efforts are underway to restore electricity at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, with crews working amidst challenging weather conditions. The power disruption, attributed to a transformer malfunction near the Grand Canyon Lodge, began Sunday evening around 7 p.m., according to the National Park Service.
The Grand Canyon Lodge, the sole accommodation facility on the North Rim, has had to cancel overnight bookings starting Monday, with no confirmed date for reopening. The National Park Service expressed gratitude for visitors’ patience, stating, “The National Park Service appreciates visitors’ patience and understanding as we continue working closely with the concessioner to restore lodging and food services to full operations.”
Despite the heavy rain and lightning storms, restoration efforts continue, though the outage has affected various facilities including the General Store, fuel station, and North Rim Campground amenities like showers and employee housing. However, key attractions such as the campground, backcountry information kiosk, scenic viewpoints, and the North Kaibab Trail are still accessible.
In the interim, evening programs have been relocated to the North Rim Campground. The North Rim, which welcomed visitors for the 2025 season on May 15, plans to keep most seasonal services available through October 15.
