Lansing Mayor’s Race Narrows Down

Lansing’s voters will soon decide whether Mayor Andy Schor will continue to lead the capital city for a third term, following a primary election that set the stage for the upcoming November decision.

Garnering 9,230 votes, Schor led the primary race. He will be challenged by Kelsea Hector, who secured the second spot on the ballot with 2,312 votes, according to unofficial results. Schor has served as Lansing’s mayor since 2018, with a political background that includes time as a state representative and an Ingham County commissioner.

Though the mayoral election in Lansing is nonpartisan, Schor’s political history is aligned with the Democratic Party from his tenure in the state House. In a recent interview with Michigan Public’s Doug Tribou and Caoilinn Goss, he emphasized his focus on economic development, housing, public safety, and infrastructure improvements as key objectives for a potential third term.

Kelsea Hector, Schor’s opponent, is the executive director of Punks with Lunch Lansing, a community outreach organization that aids in providing food, clothing, and financial assistance to those in need. Hector has been instrumental in launching a tenants rights center in Mid-Michigan and has outlined housing justice, community safety, and equitable economic development as primary goals if elected mayor.
