Progressive Activist Joins Michigan’s 7th Congressional District Race

As the Democratic primary contest intensifies in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, progressive activist William Lawrence has declared his candidacy for Congress. His entry adds another layer to an already competitive field.

Lawrence will compete against notable figures such as Bridget Brink, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine; Josh Cowen, an education professor at Michigan State University; and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam. They all aim to challenge the current Republican representative, Tom Barrett, in this politically balanced district.

In his campaign, Lawrence is prioritizing essential issues including affordable housing, accessible health care, and comprehensive elder and child care services. He emphasizes, “Security means having confidence in the future. It’s when citizens know they’re going to have housing not just today, but next year. It means a stable job that will last, and health care that is guaranteed.” Lawrence expresses concern that the lack of these guarantees is causing widespread anxiety.

Midwestern Roots and Activism

With deep roots in mid-Michigan, Lawrence’s journey began in East Lansing where he attended high school, and he continues to reside in Lansing. His activism gained momentum in 2017 when he co-founded the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led initiative that contributed to increasing green jobs in Michigan under President Joe Biden’s administration.

With over a decade dedicated to combating climate change, Lawrence has recently shifted his focus to tackle housing issues within Michigan. He asserts, “We need someone to properly represent the community, stand up to the bullies and the billionaires, and win the security and basic good that we all deserve so that we can actually look forward to the future.” Lawrence is committed to community building and advocacy, promising to fight for the district’s residents beyond campaign promises.
