Flagstaff police officer resigns following fatal crash

A Flagstaff police officer’s resignation follows two vehicular incidents, the latter tragically resulting in a fatality. The officer, Jacob Buckwald, stepped down citing “medical reasons” after these events.

The Flagstaff Police Department disclosed in a recent statement that Buckwald’s departure comes amid ongoing investigations into a deadly collision that occurred on a Saturday morning at the intersection of East Butler Avenue and Sinagua Heights Drive.

While specifics of the crash remain sparse, a department spokesperson confirmed that the other driver involved was declared deceased at the scene, whereas Buckwald sustained minor injuries and was treated at the Flagstaff Medical Center.

The incident marks Buckwald’s second crash within a 15-month period while on duty. His earlier accident on June 28, 2024, at Fourth Street and Route 66 was attributed to a “sudden medical emergency,” according to officials.

Following the first crash, Buckwald was placed on medical leave. He was eventually permitted to return to limited duties in December and resumed full patrol duties by August 31, less than three weeks prior to the recent fatal accident.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is currently handling the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the two-car collision.
