Navajo Nation Services Persist Despite Federal Shutdown
With the federal government shut down, many are concerned about the continuity of essential services. However, the Navajo Nation has announced that several crucial services will remain operational during this period.
The Navajo Council has confirmed that transportation and wildland fire management will not face disruptions. Additionally, the tribe’s government functions, including law enforcement, detention centers, and financial support for foster and residential care, are set to continue unimpeded.
Essential utilities such as irrigation, power, and dam safety will also be maintained. Indian Health Service care is secured due to advanced appropriations, ensuring health services are unaffected.
Despite these assurances, the shutdown has led to the furlough of approximately one-third of the more than 3,100 employees working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This reduction in workforce will affect the agency’s regional offices.
