Federal government pulls funding for Pima Community College program, citing DEI

In a significant development impacting educational support for underprivileged students, Pima Community College’s TRiO Upward Bound grant programs have been canceled as of the end of September, following a notification from the Department of Education on September 12.

The canceled grants were instrumental in assisting low-income and first-generation students in their college preparation journey. The decision was based on concerns related to Pima’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policy and the grant’s planned racial justice workshops.

The Department of Education articulated in its September 12 letter that the proposed project activities “may conflict with the Department’s policy for prioritizing merit, fairness, and excellence in education,” suggesting that continuing the project “is not in the best interest of the Federal Government.”
