Arizona GOP Chair to Step Down in January Amid Congressional Run
In a surprising turn of events, Gina Swoboda, the Arizona Republican Party Chair, has declared her intention to resign from her position early next year. This announcement coincides with her bid for a congressional seat.
Swoboda, who was elected as the party’s chair last year for a two-year term, will step down following the GOP’s annual meeting in January. Her decision to leave her post comes as she prepares to run in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District race.
In her statement on social media, Swoboda noted her resignation was made “[u]pon consideration of all the factors and in spite of the support” she had received from her peers.
Although no official rule mandates her resignation, Swoboda had previously suggested that the party’s state committee should decide if a special election is necessary to appoint her successor. Some members of the party had already voiced their opinions that she should step down before the January meeting to focus on her congressional campaign.
