GE Aerospace to Expand in Ashe County, Creating New Job Opportunities

Exciting developments are on the horizon for Ashe County as GE Aerospace announces plans to expand its site in West Jefferson, creating job opportunities and solidifying North Carolina’s reputation in the aviation industry. The investment of over $52.9 million by GE Aerospace will bring 44 new positions to the area.

Governor Josh Stein highlighted the significance of this expansion, noting that, “GE Aerospace’s expansion is a win for western North Carolina.” He emphasized the decision as a testament to the work ethic of Ashe County’s residents, stating that the company chose to invest in the “First in Flight” state due to its confidence in local talent.

GE Aerospace is a pivotal player in the aviation sector, powering a substantial portion of both commercial and military aircraft. The West Jefferson facility plays an essential role by manufacturing crucial components such as rotating parts, blisks, high pressure turbines, and spools for narrowbody CFM LEAP engines. The company employs approximately 2,000 individuals in North Carolina, with a significant number being veterans.

Dylan Gerding, GE Aerospace’s site leader in West Jefferson, remarked on the expansion, “West Jefferson will now have an even bigger role to play in building the future of flight for GE Aerospace.” He expressed optimism about the positive impact on both the community and the company’s customers.

Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley pointed out the thriving aerospace sector in North Carolina, stating, “More than 400 aerospace companies call North Carolina home.” He credited the state’s STEM talent and research facilities for continuing to attract global manufacturers like GE Aerospace.

The upcoming job openings will encompass positions such as apprentice machinists, inspectors, and engineers, potentially leading to an annual payroll increase of over $2.2 million for the region.

Supporting this growth, a $100,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund will aid in the company’s expansion. The OneNC Fund is designed to attract economic investments by providing financial assistance contingent upon job creation and capital investment targets being met, with local government participation required.

Senator Ralph Hise welcomed the announcement, expressing confidence in the community’s readiness to fill the new roles. Representative Ray Pickett also conveyed enthusiasm for the expansion, applauding the efforts of local and state officials in facilitating this opportunity.

Several partners are involved in supporting this project, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and others such as the North Carolina Community College System, Wilkes Community College, Ashe County, the Town of West Jefferson, Blue Ridge Energy, and Frontier Gas.
