Progress on Wildlife Overpass Near Flagstaff
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is making significant strides in a project aimed at improving safety for both wildlife and drivers along Interstate 17. A new overpass designed to help animals safely navigate across the busy highway is now more than halfway finished.
Located south of Flagstaff, this wildlife overpass project is expected to be completed by next fall. The initiative, which began in May, represents a $15.8 million investment in reducing accidents and preserving local wildlife.
The construction features a 100-foot-wide bridge, which has already had its concrete deck laid. Once finished, the bridge will be layered with soil, grass, and native plants to create a natural crossing for animals.
While construction activities are currently paused for the winter, crews are planning to resume work as soon as the weather permits next year.
ADOT data indicates that the location of this overpass is of critical importance, as it accounted for over half of the wildlife-related crashes in a 40-mile section of I-17 from 2018 to 2022. This project aims to significantly reduce such incidents by providing a safer passage for animals.
