Happy New Year!
If you’ve disconnected from the political world over the holidays, here’s a look at what’s happening in Michigan politics as 2026 unfolds. We have five major political stories to keep an eye on this year:
Upcoming Elections
The 2026 election cycle in Michigan promises to be extraordinarily significant with pivotal races, including the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate elections. Voters have a critical role, with Michigan’s entire state House, state Senate, and every U.S. House seat up for election. Additionally, open races for attorney general and secretary of state add to the high stakes of this election year. For more on the elections, see the toss-up races.
Potential Constitutional Convention
Beyond the elections, Michigan voters will decide whether to call a new convention to rewrite the state constitution. This vote occurs every 16 years, and since the 1963 adoption of the current constitution, the “con-con” has been rejected three times. However, with recent constitutional amendments on topics like independent redistricting and reproductive rights, the outcome this time could be different. Learn more about the potential convention here.
Governor Whitmer’s Future
Speculation abounds regarding Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s future political ambitions, including a possible run for President in 2028. As she continues her term, she aims to solidify her legacy by focusing on infrastructure, student literacy, and economic challenges. More on her potential plans can be found here.
Economic Uncertainty
Michigan’s economy faces unpredictability, further complicated by a lack of federal employment data due to a government shutdown. Despite these gaps, the University of Michigan Research Seminar on Quantitative Economics forecasts stalled growth in 2026, with recovery expected in 2027. Judicial Developments
The Michigan Cannabis Industry Association is challenging a new wholesale marijuana tax, arguing it undermines the voter-approved initiative. This legal battle may escalate to the Michigan Supreme Court. In another case, the legality of GOP actions during legislative sessions is under scrutiny, with potential implications for the state’s legislative process. Discover more about these cases here and here.
Also, two Michigan Supreme Court seats are up for grabs, chosen through the unique Michigan Method.
