Former West Michigan Meteorologist Enters Congressional Race

In a surprising career shift, a familiar face in West Michigan’s weather updates has set her sights on the political arena. Terri DeBoer, known for her extensive 30-year tenure as a meteorologist, has declared her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives.

DeBoer is running as a Republican candidate in the 3rd Congressional District. This district encompasses Grand Rapids and its neighboring metropolitan areas. Formerly associated with Fox17, DeBoer’s presence is still felt across the region, as her image is prominently featured in local advertising.

Her candidacy was made official with the submission of a statement of candidacy filed on Wednesday. DeBoer’s campaign is built around themes of a robust defense, affordable living, and community safety, reflecting her upbringing in a military family.

On her campaign website, she emphasizes her legislative priorities: “There will be a lot to get done when I am in Congress, but off the bat I will prioritize policies that lower the cost of living for West Michiganders, protect the vulnerable among us, and keep our communities safe,” the website outlines.

DeBoer’s run sets the stage for a contest with current Democratic representative Hillary Scholten in the upcoming November elections. Scholten holds the distinction of being the first Democrat to represent Grand Rapids in Congress in nearly 50 years, as well as being the first female to do so.
