Tragic Incident at NAU Fraternity Event

A Northern Arizona University student’s life was tragically cut short after consuming a dangerous amount of vodka during a fraternity event. The young man’s death has sparked a serious investigation into fraternity practices and the enforcement of hazing laws.

Colin Daniel Martinez, aged 18, was discovered unresponsive after attending a Delta Tau Delta fraternity rush event in Flagstaff on January 31. The Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that his blood-alcohol content reached a staggering 0.425%, which is over five times the legal limit for driving in the state.

Authorities in Flagstaff apprehended three fraternity leaders, all aged 20, on hazing-related suspicions. These individuals may face charges connected to Martinez’s tragic passing.

The Coconino County Attorney’s Office is currently assessing the case to decide on formal charges, though no timeline has been provided for when a decision might be expected.

Documents from the court indicate that Martinez, along with three other pledges, consumed two bottles of vodka, which allegedly was intended to induce vomiting. Witnesses reported attempts to care for Martinez by repositioning him, checking his vitals, and researching alcohol poisoning symptoms throughout the night.

In response to the incident, NAU has suspended the Delta Tau Delta chapter, and the fraternity’s national body has since shut down the chapter permanently.
