Gila Bend Library to Reopen After New Agreement and Renovations

The Gila Bend community will soon regain library services after nearly a year without access, following a new agreement.
Maricopa County library services will soon return to Gila Bend

The residents of Gila Bend are set to welcome back library services, addressing the community’s nearly year-long gap in access. This development comes as a relief to many who have been without this essential resource since last year.

Previously, Maricopa County managed a library located in a facility owned by the town of Gila Bend. According to Samantha Mears from the Maricopa County Library District, “The way our intergovernmental agreements often work is that the county funds library operations, and then the building partner funds the maintenance of that facility.”

Seeking a larger venue, the library was relocated to a building managed by the Gila Bend Unified School District (GBUSD). However, in May 2025, this arrangement came to an end. Mears explained, “Unfortunately, the school district did come to us and let us know that they weren’t able to manage the funds it was taking to cover the cost of keeping the building open that many hours a week.”

In response, a new deal has been struck between Maricopa County and the town of Gila Bend. This agreement allows the library to return to its original site after renovations are completed. The refurbishment process is expected to take around six months, after which the library will once again serve the community.
