Calls for Immigration Reform Intensify Amid Detention of Military Spouse
Amid growing concerns over the treatment of undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, U.S. Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego are urging legislative action to protect these individuals. At a recent press gathering, Kelly denounced the Trump administration’s deportation tactics, which he claims unfairly targeted law-abiding residents.
The case of Annie Ramos, a military spouse and Arizona State University student, was highlighted as an example. Ramos, detained by immigration officers earlier this year while attempting to access a military base with her husband, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank, has sparked debate over the priorities of immigration enforcement. Entering the U.S. from Honduras in 2005 as an infant, Ramos has since contributed to her community as a biochemistry major and a Sunday school teacher.
Jen Rickling, Blank’s mother, emphasized Ramos’s positive impact, describing her as “someone who brings light to everyone she interacts with” during the press event in Washington, D.C.
Kelly criticized the focus on individuals like Ramos, advocating instead for targeting “serious criminals.” He questioned, “In what world does it make sense for us to focus our time and our effort chasing down and holding people like Annie? We should be chasing down serious criminals.”
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, established in 2012 under President Obama, aimed to shield such immigrants from deportation. However, Congress has yet to enact comprehensive immigration reform to ensure a pathway to citizenship, leaving DACA recipients like Ramos in a precarious position.
Ramos’s DACA application, submitted in 2020, remains unresolved due to ongoing legal disputes, as reported by the Associated Press. Kelly stressed the urgency of legislative action, stating, “We can pass laws to make sure that Dreamers are safe and secure in the only home many of them have ever known.”
The Department of Homeland Security defended its actions regarding Ramos, asserting, “She has no legal status to be in this country” and confirmed that she is facing ‘further removal proceedings.’
Senator Gallego, speaking at a forum, called for the passage of the Dream Act, co-sponsored by Senators Dick Durbin and Lisa Murkowski, which would offer legal status pathways for Dreamers. Gallego accused the Trump administration of hindering the bill, arguing, “What this administration is doing is they’re basically being cowards because they know that Dreamers and the Dream Act have bipartisan support. … They’re trying to do it in a backdoor way by basically making it so difficult for Dreamers to get their permission renewed again to the point where then that they’re finally exposed to deportation.”
