Bear Sighting Alert Issued for Southern Arizona Communities

Residents in southern Arizona are being urged to stay vigilant following sightings of a black bear in the regions of Green Valley and Sahuarita. These communities, located just south of Tucson, have become the center of attention as wildlife officials monitor the bear’s movements.

According to Mark Freiberg from the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the bear is probably transient and not expected to linger long enough to cause significant issues. However, he advises residents to secure any potential food sources such as trash bins and pet food to avoid attracting the bear. “If a bear or wildlife in general find food that’s being left out by the public, they may sit there and stay at that spot and that can become problematic,” Freiberg stated.

In the event that the bear becomes troublesome, the department may resort to capturing, tranquilizing, and relocating it. Should it pose a threat to human safety, euthanasia may be considered, Freiberg noted. He explained that bears often venture into human-populated areas during periods of extreme heat and aridity.

Locals are encouraged to report any sightings of the bear to the Arizona Game and Fish Department by calling 623-236-7201. This proactive measure will help ensure both public safety and the well-being of the bear.
