Wildfire Expands in Coconino National Forest Amidst Challenging Weather Conditions
The Papa Fire, initially covering 30 acres, has now expanded to 100 acres as reported by the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and Coconino National Forest officials. The fire is located approximately 13 miles east of Flagstaff and is advancing in a north/northeast direction through grass and timber.
Fire crews, including a hotshot crew, one hand crew, six engines, a dozer, a water tender, and aerial support, are actively working to contain the blaze. The strategy employed, described as “direct extinguishment,” aims to limit the fire’s spread to the smallest possible perimeter as swiftly as possible.
Although smoke is visible from Flagstaff and will persist throughout suppression efforts, forest managers have stated that there are currently no threats to infrastructure or other critical assets. They have advised the public to steer clear of the affected area.
This fire incident coincides with red flag conditions prevalent across much of northern Arizona. Weather forecasts predict winds ranging from 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour. Additionally, relative humidity levels may decrease to as low as 5% in some locations, further complicating firefighting efforts.
In related efforts to manage forest health, Kaibab National Forest managers are focusing on mitigating the risks posed by dead and damaged trees left by last year’s Dragon Bravo and White Sage fires.
