Michigan’s Political Landscape Shifts as Two Women Eye Presidential Race
In a surprising twist for Michigan politics, two prominent women from the state are contemplating bids for the presidency. Recently, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer hinted at the possibility of a future White House run by saying “never say never”. Now, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin has expressed similar ambitions for the 2028 election.
During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club, Slotkin, a Democrat, emphasized the need for her generation to step up in the political arena. “This is our generation’s time to fight and I want to be part of that one way or another,” she stated.
Slotkin believes that her profile or someone with a similar background would be ideal for the 2028 presidential race, especially as the 22nd Amendment prevents Republican President Donald Trump from running again. She highlighted Michigan’s status as a pivotal swing state, often decisive in national elections.
“We are an anomaly,” Slotkin explained. “We are an unusual place and I think it’s a lesson for the rest of the country that if you want to understand how to appeal to people across the aisle and actually get practical solutions done, come and see us.”
The senator pointed out that a candidate from a Midwestern swing state like Michigan might resonate with voters nationwide who prioritize solutions over partisanship. She remarked, “I think we’re a practical, reasonable people who know how to work hard. No one would ever call us flashy. We just put our heads down and get things done, and that is what we need more of, certainly in my party, but I think in both.”
Slotkin has been actively increasing her national presence since joining the Senate, participating in national media and visiting states with early primaries. Her political journey began with securing a highly contested U.S. House seat, previously and subsequently held by Republicans. Her Senate victory in 2024 coincided with Donald Trump winning Michigan in the presidential election.
