NVIDIA Partners with Amkor to Bring Chip Production Closer to Home
In a significant move towards enhancing the chip manufacturing landscape in the United States, NVIDIA has announced a $1.5 billion collaboration with Amkor Technology, a company based in Tempe. This partnership focuses on the crucial stages of chip packaging and testing, essential for the development of artificial intelligence technologies.
The packaging process involves encasing semiconductors in protective metal and plastic shells. This step is vital as it shields the chips from damage and facilitates their integration with other hardware components.
Currently, much of the chip packaging is conducted overseas. However, the collaboration between NVIDIA and Amkor aims to shift more of these operations to the U.S., specifically in Arizona. This move is expected to strengthen the supply chain resilience for AI chips, ensuring a more robust infrastructure for future technological advancements.
Amkor has emphasized that the relocation of packaging and testing operations to Arizona will play a pivotal role in fortifying the supply chain for AI chip manufacturing, bolstering the overall reliability and efficiency of the process.
