Efforts Intensify to Control Rapidly Spreading Wildfire Near Flagstaff
Firefighters are working diligently to contain a swiftly moving wildfire that erupted east of Flagstaff, posing potential risks to nearby infrastructure. The blaze, known as the Papa Fire, has already consumed 133 acres of land.
According to Coconino National Forest officials, the fire ignited around 2:30 p.m. on Monday just north of Winona, approximately 13 miles from Flagstaff. The warm and windy weather, combined with dry conditions, facilitated the fire’s rapid spread through grass and timber.
Responding to the emergency, a hotshot crew, a hand crew, 11 engines, two water tenders, a dozer, and aerial personnel were deployed. More resources are anticipated to reinforce the firefighting efforts today. The strategy being employed focuses on “direct extinguishment,” aiming to keep the fire’s perimeter as small as possible, as quickly as possible.
Currently, no residential areas are under threat. However, there is concern for nearby infrastructure, including gas pipelines and a power line managed by the Western Area Power Administration. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across northern Arizona, as stated by the National Weather Service. They caution that strong winds and low humidity levels could accelerate the fire’s growth both in size and intensity. Residents may notice smoke east of Flagstaff due to the fire.
Officials urge the public to steer clear of the affected area to ensure safety and facilitate firefighting operations.
