Power Outages Loom for Northern Arizona Amidst Heightened Fire Risks

As northern Arizona braces for a weekend of heightened fire danger, approximately 10,000 Arizona Public Service (APS) customers might face power outages on Saturday. The utility company is considering a public safety power shutoff starting at 9 a.m. if conditions such as high winds, low humidity, and dry environments escalate wildfire threats.

This precautionary measure could impact areas including Doney Park, Timberline, Mormon Lake, parts of east Flagstaff, Tusayan, and the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. According to APS, the shutdown aims to mitigate the risk of power equipment igniting wildfires.

Earlier in April, APS implemented a similar safety protocol for the first time, marking its commitment to preventing potential fire hazards due to electrical infrastructure. Customers will receive prior notifications should the power shutoff be enacted, ensuring they are prepared for the outage.
