Washington’s Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is at the center of growing controversy as the nearly $16 million renovation project faces mounting problems as the Fourth of July approaches.
Cracking Lining and a Dead Duckling
Significant cracking has emerged in the pool’s new “American Flag Blue” lining, raising questions about the quality of the work. The damage was clearly visible to visitors on Monday, June 22, with chunks of the lining peeling away from the basin. On June 21, a dead duckling was also spotted in the water, drawing concern from onlookers, though the duckling’s cause of death remains undetermined. The combination of the cracking paint, the algae-ridden water, and the animal’s death fueled further public unease about conditions at one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks.
Compounding the visual damage to the lining, the pool has also been plagued by stubborn algal blooms that turned the water a striking pea-soup green, prompting widespread ridicule online. Workers were filmed pouring 12% hydrogen peroxide into the pool in an attempt to treat the algae, a method the Department of the Interior confirmed on June 15 as a milder alternative to chlorine. Despite these efforts, the corners of the pool continued to experience high algae levels, a problem made worse by the region’s increasingly hot summer weather. In a June 19 Truth Social post, Trump accused unknown assailants of deliberately pouring chemicals into the pool to sabotage the renovation, though no evidence of that claim has been made public.
The pool sits between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, making it one of the most visited stretches of the National Mall. Its condition during a high-profile renovation has attracted intense public and media scrutiny, with videos and photos of the green, swampy-looking water circulating widely on social media in recent weeks.
A Costly Endeavor Funded by Taxpayers
The $16 million price tag on the Reflecting Pool renovation has drawn considerable attention, particularly as the project’s visible problems continue to mount. The expenditure of taxpayer dollars on a renovation that has produced cracking lining, algal blooms, and a dead duckling has prompted questions about how the money was allocated and whether proper oversight was in place. For many Americans, the sight of a deteriorating, swampy-looking pool at one of the country’s most cherished landmarks is a difficult image to reconcile with that scale of the investment.

Adding to the cost concerns, the deployment of National Guardsmen, surveillance equipment, and other security personnel to guard the pool from alleged vandals represents yet another draw on public resources. President Donald Trump announced that several people had been arrested after reportedly attempting to peel off pieces of the cracking blue lining, and five people were ultimately taken into custody in connection with the “vandalism” authorities claim to have taken place. Taxpayer dollars are now being spent to protect a taxpayer-funded renovation that is visibly failing.
Trump Weighs In On The Reflecting Pool Renovation
Trump addressed the situation in a June 19 Truth Social post, accusing unnamed individuals of pouring chemicals into the pool in an attempt to “destroy and demean our beautiful work.” He touted the administration’s broader beautification efforts across the capital, writing that his team had renovated more than 45 monuments and memorials, 28 statues, and 22 fountains across Washington. In a subsequent post, Trump said he personally “inspected” the Reflecting Pool and that repair work would “begin immediately.”
The administration has framed the renovation as part of a sweeping effort to restore and beautify Washington’s landmark spaces. As one of America’s most recognizable landmarks prepares to host Fourth of July crowds, the Reflecting Pool’s troubled renovation serves as a very public test of the administration’s ability to follow through on its promises.
