Georgia Rep. Mike Collins Faces Scrutiny Over Crypto Transactions Amid Endorsement for Stock Trading Ban

Georgia Representative Mike Collins has publicly supported a ban on congressional stock trading, yet his own financial activities in cryptocurrency have drawn attention. During an April meet-and-greet, Collins was confronted by a voter over his crypto dealings, to which he responded by suggesting that cryptocurrencies are not susceptible to insider trading.

Collins explained, “I don’t know how you would manipulate crypto. It’d be like trying to manipulate the dollar, the peso or something. But the stock trading, I don’t know how to do it … All I want to know is when people stop doing it. They’re getting insider information.”

However, Collins’ statement overlooks the reality that although cryptocurrencies are not traded on traditional stock markets, they can still be influenced by non-public information. These cases are generally pursued as wire or commodities fraud rather than insider trading due to the nature of cryptocurrencies.

In a related incident from 2021, North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorne was fined $14,000 by the House Ethics Committee for promoting a cryptocurrency in which he had a significant investment. This highlights the regulatory challenges surrounding crypto and ethical concerns for lawmakers.

Proposals to ban congressional stock trading, such as those supported by Collins, often include provisions that extend to cryptocurrencies.

Recently, Collins won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Georgia. His primary opponent, Derek Dooley, criticized him for his involvement in cryptocurrencies. Dooley’s campaign stated on X, “Collins treats Congress like his own crypto casino. Georgians deserve leaders focused on service, not self-enrichment.”

The topic is expected to be a focal point in the upcoming general election. Incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who is seeking reelection, has emphasized combating political corruption and self-enrichment as key campaign issues.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, who supports Collins’ campaign, has also faced criticism for a $1.4 billion windfall from his family’s cryptocurrency ventures. This adds another layer to the ongoing discourse around political figures and cryptocurrency investments.

According to a Fox News poll conducted earlier this month, Senator Ossoff is leading Collins by 13 points among likely voters.
