US Gas Prices Over Amid Ongoing Trump-Iran Conflict

Article Summary –

Trump defended his military actions in Iran despite rising fuel costs, asserting it was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, even as gasoline prices increased to over $4 per gallon from $3.13 at the start of his second term. Despite his campaign promises to significantly reduce energy prices, Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent attacks on commercial ships led to reduced U.S. oil supplies and higher fuel costs, with American households paying $477 more for gasoline on average. While Trump claimed future reductions in gas prices, the House of Representatives passed a resolution to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran, a move not supported by the GOP-led Senate.

President Donald Trump defended military strikes on Iran, dismissing concerns about rising costs for American consumers. In an Aug. 14 speech in Garden City, New York, he stated: “We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon. So remember that, when you pay a little more at $4. It’s OK. I’ll never apologize. I did the right thing.”

As of Aug. 14, the average U.S. unleaded gasoline cost was over $4.07 per gallon, according to the AAA Fuel Prices tracker. This is almost a dollar more than the $3.13 average price when Trump began his second term on Jan. 20, 2025.

During his 2024 campaign, Trump pledged to lower American consumer prices and curb inflation. In a September 2024 speech, he vowed to halve energy prices within a year and cut gasoline prices to under $2 a gallon.

Trump initiated U.S. military attacks on Iran on Feb. 28. In response, Iran blocked oil tankers via the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for Middle East exports. As a result, U.S. supplies dwindled, and fuel prices soared. Despite Trump’s claims that the strait is open, Iran attacked commercial ships passing through.

American households have spent $477 more on gasoline since the Iran conflict began, according to Congress’ Joint Economic Committee minority staff analysis. Trump has frequently predicted a price drop.

On June 14, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Hormuz Strait will open shortly. Gas prices will plummet, and affordability will outshine the Biden Administration’s record inflation years.”

“GAS PRICES COMING DOWN, FAST!” he stated on June 29.

“Prices coming down along with the lowering of oil and gas,” he commented on July 12, signing off as President DJT.

The White House declined immediate comment for this story.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on July 23 by a 214-208 vote, urging Trump “to withdraw U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities with Iran.” Four Republicans joined all 210 Democrats in favor. Similar initiatives have been defeated in the GOP-led U.S. Senate.
