Michigan Reports First EEE Case Since 2021; Health Officials Advise Caution

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Resurfaces in Michigan

In a concerning development, a case of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) has been detected in a Michigan resident, marking the state’s first human case of the disease since 2021. The individual, from Roscommon County, tested positive for this mosquito-borne illness, which poses significant health risks.

EEE is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Although cases are infrequent in the U.S., the disease is notably severe, with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) citing a 30% fatality rate among infected individuals.

Symptoms of EEE can include fever, headache, chills, and nausea. In more severe instances, the illness may lead to brain inflammation, characterized by disorientation, seizures, and coma.

In response to this case, health officials are emphasizing preventive measures against mosquito bites:

Utilize insect repellents containing active ingredients like DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone.

Avoid applying repellent to infants under two months; instead, dress them in protective clothing and use mosquito netting over cribs and strollers.

Wear protective attire, such as shoes, socks, and long-sleeved clothing, when outdoors.

Ensure that window and door screens are secure and repair any that are damaged.

Weekly, remove standing water around your home to prevent mosquito breeding, such as water in bird baths, abandoned pools, and old tires.

State and local health departments, in collaboration with other agencies, are actively monitoring EEE presence in humans, mosquitoes, domestic animals, and wildlife. In Roscommon County, additional mosquito trapping and testing efforts are underway to assess the risk level more accurately.
