Wild Horse Preservation Efforts Undergo Strategic Shift in Arizona
In a significant policy shift, Governor Katie Hobbs has introduced a revised strategy to maintain a robust population of wild horses in the Tonto National Forest. The new approach halts the annual removal of horses and increases the desired number of these animals in the area.
The updated plan for managing the Salt River Horse Herd now aims for a population of 170 horses, a rise from the previous target of 120. This contrasts sharply with earlier intentions to remove 25 horses each year, where those horses were typically adopted by state-approved sanctuaries.
Working alongside the Arizona Department of Agriculture, the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group is integral to the implementation of this new strategy. Governor Hobbs has emphasized the importance of this initiative by commissioning a study on the herd’s genetic viability, to be conducted by scientists from Arizona’s state universities.
“By pausing the adoption schedule in the current Management Plan, the Arizona Department of Agriculture has created time for the Arizona Board of Regents to fund a study at my request on the genetic needs and characteristics of the Salt River Horses,” Hobbs stated on Tuesday.
Wild horse advocates have warmly welcomed the governor’s announcement, viewing it as a positive step towards ensuring the welfare of the horses and their natural habitat. Simone Netherlands, president of the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m thrilled. This suspension of removals and new study will allow us to continue our successful management of the herd and ensure that the Salt River Horses are healthy and thriving.”
In related news, the U.S. Forest Service has put forward a proposal to remove federal guidelines that have long restricted road construction on nearly 45 million acres of public lands. This move marks a significant change in land management policies.
