In a surprising political twist, some Democrats in Michigan are lending their support to the Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers. This development comes amid ongoing efforts by Rogers to appeal to Democrats who did not back Abdul El-Sayed in the recent primary election.
During the primary, voters were divided between El-Sayed’s progressive agenda and Congresswoman Haley Stevens’ (D-MI 11) moderate stance. Rogers has expressed his commitment to gaining the trust of those on both sides of the aisle.
“Michigan deserves a senator who will sit down, whether you voted for me or not, who will listen to you, will treat you with respect, who will represent everybody,” Rogers stated at an event in Detroit.
His policy proposals aimed at Democrats include improving children’s literacy, making housing more affordable, and enhancing credit scores.
Among the Democrats expressing discontent with El-Sayed are Rabbi Asher Lopatin from Huntington Woods, state Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit), and a voter who identifies as a supporter of Obama, Clinton, and Biden. Their dissatisfaction stems from various reasons.
Lopatin has criticized El-Sayed and other Democrats for their lack of action against antisemitism. “The fact that they have not spoken out against that is very disappointing,” Lopatin remarked, while also praising Rogers’s character.
El-Sayed has countered these accusations, asserting in an NBC News interview, “I love and revere Judaism and the Jewish people,” and drawing a distinction between faith and the actions of the Israeli government.
The pro-Israel lobby has invested heavily against El-Sayed this election season.
Whitsett refrained from direct criticism of El-Sayed but voiced concerns about his Medicare for All proposal, arguing it would lead to excessive government intervention in healthcare.
“The government will be controlling your healthcare. They will control your doctors, they will control your medication, they will control your visits, they will control everything,” Whitsett stated.
El-Sayed’s campaign has responded by tying Rogers to former President Donald Trump, alleging that Rogers would prioritize Trump’s interests over Michigan’s.
“Mike Rogers will put Donald Trump ahead of Michigan every single time. Just like he carried water for Trump’s dangerous election lies, he’ll rubber-stamp Trump’s reckless agenda — driving up gas prices and sending your tax dollars to fight foreign wars,” said El-Sayed campaign spokesperson Cole Wozniak.
Wozniak emphasized that El-Sayed is “the only candidate with a coalition that can win this November” and plans to focus on reducing the influence of money in politics while enhancing financial security for constituents.
The success of both candidates in the upcoming November election will greatly depend on their ability to attract independent voters while maintaining support from their respective bases.
