Michigan Coalition Launches Campaign Against Constitutional Convention Proposal

In an unusual alliance, various political groups and leaders have united to oppose a proposal that would initiate a state constitutional convention in Michigan. The proposal, which appears on the ballot every 16 years as mandated by the current state constitution, could lead to a comprehensive rewrite of Michigan’s governing document.

At a recent event in Flint, figures from traditionally opposing political backgrounds came together to express their concerns over the potential constitutional convention. Among them was former Republican State Attorney General Bill Schuette, who warned that such a convention could lead to disorder.

“This would be a circus,” Schuette remarked, emphasizing his belief that it would provide a platform for “wannabe influencers.”

Meanwhile, former Democratic Congressman Dan Kildee acknowledged that while the state constitution might benefit from certain amendments, a convention is not the optimal approach. “(Even) if there are a handful of reforms that many of us could agree on,” Kildee stated, “Buried in them would be a number of reforms or changes that would be a reflection of very narrow special interests.”

Opponents of the convention express apprehension that special interest groups could exploit the process to embed contentious policies into the state constitution. Despite its long-standing presence in Michigan’s electoral agenda, many voters remain uninformed about the convention question set for the upcoming November ballot, according to a spokesperson for the “no” campaign.

Michigan residents will have the opportunity to start casting their votes in three weeks, with Election Day scheduled for November 3.
