New System Analyzes How We Talk to Our Pets
In an innovative step towards understanding human-animal communication, the Bray Lab at the University of Arizona has developed a unique coding system designed to decode the way pet owners converse with their animals. This system, known as the Auditory-based Understanding of Relational Animal-directed Language (AURAL-Pet), offers new insights into the dynamics of owner-pet interactions.
Using a wide array of audio recordings, AURAL-Pet examines the conversations between humans and their pets. The recordings, collected randomly throughout the day, help model these interactions in a natural context. Data from 240 participants, sourced from four archival studies, provided a significant sample size, featuring 5,027 sound clips captured via an electronically activated recorder (EAR) app.
The EAR app played a crucial role by recording brief audio segments—lasting 30 to 50 seconds—at random intervals during the day, ensuring the documentation of authentic behavioral patterns. Through this data, the system evaluates 30 different variables in human-pet communication. These include the use of nicknames, the tendency of owners to assume a parental role, and the manner in which they speak to pets as if they were human beings.
Dara Jonkoski, a Ph.D. student and co-author of the study on AURAL-Pet, highlighted a key finding: “We found that people were talking to their pets about 10% of the time in which they were speaking at all, so it really speaks to the importance that pets play in people’s lives.”
The research team anticipates that AURAL-Pet will pave the way for future studies aimed at accurately assessing wellness outcomes in pet owners. By shedding light on the subtle nuances of owner-pet interactions, this technology promises to enhance our understanding of the significant role pets play in human lives.
