Scott Twito, the seasoned Yellowstone County Attorney, is set to head the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana. Twito announced his resignation, effective Oct. 25, to make way for his new role as interim U.S. attorney starting the next day. His decision to exit on a Sunday stems from his role’s weekend commitments.

“I love the job,” Twito remarked, expressing his dedication to community service. His extensive 29-year career with the county attorney’s office, including 15 years as the lead attorney, underscores his commitment. In his resignation, Twito described the appointment as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” and ensured his office was prepared for his absence.
Twito emphasized the competency of his team, stating, “My office is full of capable, dedicated public servants ready to continue serving the people of Yellowstone County.” His name will remain on the November ballot, and the Board of County Commissioners will appoint an interim successor to serve through the 2028 election, per state law.
A spokesperson confirmed Twito’s interim nomination, with plans to release an official statement upon his swearing-in. While Twito has advised the commissioners on possible successors, he withheld specific names. Expressing gratitude, he noted, “I am proud of my service and forever grateful to those who helped me along the way.”
Twito is eager to join the U.S. Attorney’s Office, acknowledging its skilled team and hoping for their support as he transitions. Commissioners Mark Morse, Mike Waters, and Chris White haven’t commented yet on Twito’s departure.
